Permits

Anyone wishing to enter forest estates managed by TIMBERLANDS Limited must obtain an access permit.
Details of how and where permits can be obtained are listed below.
Permits will not be issued to anyone trespassed or in receipt of a warning from TIMBERLANDS Limited
or any other Central North Island forest owner’s forest. Permits are only issued for:

  1. Hunting & Fishing during permitted periods - RECREATIONAL ACCESS PERMITS
  2. Approved Suppliers or Commercial Businesses - BUSINESS ACCESS PERMITS

Please Note:

  • Due to safety and commercial reasons permits are not issued to the general public for firewood.
  • Goudies Road is a private forest road where use requires a permit. Unauthorised use may result in tresspass.
    Only vehicles using Goudies Road for forest management related purposes or recreation (hunting access only) may be granted permits.

RECREATIONAL ACCESS PERMITS - Required for Hunting & Fishing Access

To be eligible for a recreational access permit, you must now register annually with ISCL by either completing a:

Permit Registration Form (including GST inclusive payment of $50 registration fee) perRegistration Fee Update or a
Land Owner Registration Form.

Registrations are now open and you are encouraged to register early to ensure your permits can be processed for this year's hunting and fishing season.

Recreational permits are limited to hunting and fishing in the designated areas only.
When the fire danger (BUI) exceeds 15 (MODERATE Fire Danger Level), all forests will be closed to recreational users.
Recreational access applies to daylight hours during the weekend and public holidays only.
NOTE that access may be closed to all or parts of the forest at short notice during periods of high risk (e.g., forest operations, elevated fire danger levels or extreme winds etc).
Recreational permits will be issued and must be carried at all times with a form of photo ID.

Recreational access permit applicants will need to provide ISCL the following information:

  • Driver's Licence
  • Vehicle Registration Number and proof of current WOF and Registration
  • Firearms Licence
  • Fishing or Game Bird Licence
  • Duly completed ISCL Recreational Permit Registration Form or Land Owner Registration Form
  • $50 Permit Registration Fee (not required by verified land owners).
  • Fishing and Hunting is closed to the public during the fire season when the fire danger (BUI) exceeds 15 (Moderate Fire Danger Level).

HUNTING access is available in Kaingaroa, Whirinaki and Rotoehu Forests only.
No hunting in closed areas or in areas where 1080 has been applied. See link to Forest Access and Closures.

FISHING access is only to the water bodies in Kaingaroa Forest (i.e. Rangitaiki River, Flaxy Lake and Wheo River)
and to Lake Rotomahana through Waimungu Forest. See link to Forest Access and Closures.

NOTE OFFICE HOURS:
ISCL offices are open Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm.
Applicants must apply for weekend permits by the Thursday prior to the coming weekend for recreational permits.
Weekend permits will be available for pick up by 3pm on the Friday, from the ISCL Office.
ISCL provides a permit box at their office where permits can be collected outside of office hours, for people who live out of town
or work fulltime and want to use a permit issued on a Friday to go hunting early on Saturday morning.
If application time allows, ISCL will post out rural and out-of-town permits only.


BUSINESS ACCESS PERMITS - Required for Approved Suppliers, Contractors, Research & Development and Services to Contractors

Business access permit applicants will be required to have a verified business reason to enter the forest and provide the following information: 

  • Some form of Photo Identification
  • Drivers Licence
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Health & Safety Policy
  • NZQA Unit Standards 17769 (Old Version - General Requirements)
  • Public Liability Insurance - $5 Million (Low Risk*); $10 Million (High Risk)
  • Rural Fire & Protection Insurance - $1 Million (Low Risk*); $2M (High Risk)

*Low Risk includes:
(i)   Contractors who do not operate machinery in the forest;
(ii)  People providing services to TIMBERLANDS Limited contractors and
(iii) Access for research or other purposes deemed to be "Low Risk" by TIMBERLANDSLimited.

If you are already on the TIMBERLANDS Limited permit issuing database you will not need to provide this information unless your details need updating, however you will be required to produce updated insurance certificates the next time you apply for a permit.
