Fire Risk Update

 

The 2011/2012 Fire Season has now officially commenced.

Fire Permits are now required.

Refer toPumicelands Rural Fire Authority Notice 2011/12 for instructions on how to apply for a Fire Permit.

The fire season runs from 1 October to 30 April the following year. For details on current fire risks within the Central North Island please contact our Radio Room on 07 350 1122.

TIMBERLANDS's Notice Board

Whaka Forest Harvesting Operations - COMMENCING WEDNESDAY, 22 FEBRUARY 2012 - Updated 21 February 2012

Harvesting Operations will commence in AREA 1 on Wednesday, 22 February - Please note the following:

  • Tree Felling will commence in AREA 1, along Nursery Road, for a duration of approximately 1-2 weeks.
    See AREA 1  Map for location.
  • No access to the public will be permitted through or near the hazard areas until signage is removed.
    See Harvest Operations Schedule for details of closures.
  • Please take alternative route or detours (if available). DO NOT go past "Road Closed" signs, banners or tapes.
  • Roads and tracks, not affected by felling, will be open during weekends and outside working hours (6am - 5pm).
  • Timberlands Limited wishes to thank the public for their patience and cooperation while forest management operations are being carried out in the Whaka Forest.

Summary of Up and Coming Harvesting Operations

  • Harvesting Operations, within the core recreational area, will commence on 22 February with a number of short duration jobs.
  • Road preparations are now in progress.
  • Affected AREAS are detailed in the  Harvest Operations Schedule and  Map. In summary, the schedule is as follows:
    • AREA 1 - Harvesting operations to commence 22 February, which will close off major access.
    • AREA 2 - Harvesting operations will commence 4-5 March and will be completed by 13 March or sooner.
    • AREA 3 - Production Thinning operations will commence after the completion of harvesting in AREA 1 and will close off major access for approximately 2-3 weeks.
    • AREA 4 - Harvesting operations near the sewerage treatment ponds, will take up to two weeks in March. Date to be confirmed.
    • AREA 5 - Harvesting operations of a small area adjacent to the Nursery and Wash Roads junction is expected to take 2-3 days.
  • Mountain bike, walking and horse tracks within the harvest areas will be CLOSED to all users until reinstated following the completion of each harvest area.
  • Mountain bike, walking and horse tracks and roads, along side or near harvest areas, will be CLOSED to all users during felling, when any sections are within the Felling Danger Zone. These tracks and roads will be open during weekends and outside working hours, unless closed by signage. Please observe closure notices and banners. There may be alternative routes or detours available.
  • Logging trucks will be operating. All other road users must give way to trucks and get off the roadway quickly.
  • The closures and inconvenience are unavoidable for the safety of all, but Timberlands Limited will endeavour to minimise the impact to recreational users wherever possible. Notices and signage will be set up as normal to advise of these closures.

Forest Access and Closures 

ACCESS - LATEST UPDATE

  • Hunting and fishing access to Kaingaroa Forest is currently CLOSED. A decision to further extend the hunting season will be reviewed each Monday. This will depend on fire danger levels reducing to LOW.  

ACCESS - GENERAL INFORMATION - Important Please Read

  • Timberlands Limited is cooperating with Police to minimise criminal activities and unsafe behaviour in the Kaingaroa Forest. See link to the Police Media Release. Notification dated December 2011.
  • Due to a major washout, Waipunga Road is impassable and CLOSED for access - Notification dated 28 January 2011.  
  • Access to the Rangitaiki River and Flaxy Lakes is currently CLOSED.
  • Access to Lake Rotomahana through Waimungu Forest is CLOSED (i.e.: not subject to a season extension and the gate will be locked).
  • Access over the public access easement of Kiorenui Road to Ngawhinga Road, then Ngawhinga Road to the Rangitaiki River remains open during daylight hours only. This is strictly for access to the Rangitaiki River. No other road(s) can be used and no other activity (i.e.: hunting) without a permit is allowed.
